Hiccups are a common and often uncomfortable and embarrassing problem that generally last for just a few minutes.. Hiccups are medically known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter (SDF) or singultus. Temporary contractions in the diaphragm muscles cause the hiccups. Hiccups are most often a reaction to common digestive disturbances. Common causes of Hiccups are; excitement or stress, alcohol or excess smoking, overeating, drinking carbonated beverages, eating very hot & spicy or cold food or drink, eating too fast, heartburn or acid reflux And stretching of the stomach after eating or drinking. 
Other serious conditions may include:  Hiatus hernia, irritation of the diaphragm by infection, severe kidney failure, brain infection or tumor and Infections such as malaria. Whatever's causing the hiccups, they are annoying and irritating. Although hiccups stop on their own, continuous hiccups last for three or four days, or you suffer really frequent bouts of hiccups, it may indicate a cause of an underlying disease, you should see a doctor .If you are a mild case of hiccups, try these natural home remedies to stop those annoying hiccups.


1-Cumin seeds, Cloves, Sugar Candy

Make a paste of 3teaspoons Cumin seeds, 5 Cloves, 10 grams Sugar Candy and a little bit water. Taking twice a day will quickly stop your hiccups.

2-Green Cardamom, Sugar

Cardamom is an effective remedy for hiccups. Roast slightly 3 teaspoons seeds of Green Cardamoms and grind them with 20 grams Sugar, have ½ tsp along with lukewarm water twice a day. This best remedy would provide an instant relief.

3-Turmeric powder, Honey

Mix 1gram Turmeric root powder and 6 gram honey after having it your hiccups will go away immediately.

4-Nigella seeds powder, Clarified Unsalted Butter

Mix 6 gram Nigella (Kalonji) seeds powder in 6 gram Butter or Clarified Butter (Desi Ghee) .After consuming you’ll get relief from hiccups quickly.

5-Green Cardamom Peels

Boil 5-6 pounded Green Cardamom or only 6 gram peels of Green Cardamom in 2 cups of water until reduced by 1 cup strain and drink while warm. This remedy helps the muscles of the diaphragm to relax and this will stop your hiccups.

6-Almond, Black peppers, Jaggrey

Make a paste of 5 blanched Almond kernels, 5 Black pepper corns and 12 gram Jaggrey (Gur), have it 3 times a day. This is an effective natural way to cure hiccups.

7-Sugar Cane Bits

Whenever you suffer from hiccups start sucking small bits of Sugar Cane (Gandairy) your hiccups go away fast.

8-Chocolate Drink

Consuming chocolate drink (Cocoa or Ovaltine) would stop the hiccups instantly.

9-Mustard seeds, Clarified Unsalted Butter

Eating paste of ½ tsp Mustard seeds mixed with ½ tsp Clarified unsalted Butter (Desi Ghee) will relieve hiccups.

10-Pineapple Juice

Drinking ½ cup of Pineapple juice is an instant cure for hiccups. Some think the acidic content of the juice helps stop the hiccups.

11-Apple cider vinegar, Dill pickle, Lemon juice

The sharp surprise of something sour can pucker lips and lick the hiccups. Apple cider vinegar or dill pickle or lemon juice provides an instant cure for hiccups.
Vinegar is a nasty tasting cure for the hiccups but it just might work. Take a big tablespoonful of vinegar and swallow it. It might cure the hiccups itself or at least you will be concentrating on how bad the vinegar tasted and that may cure your hiccups.
Another vinegary method is to suck on a dill pickle.Its sour taste could stop a hiccup in its tracks.
Lemons are believed to overwhelm irritated nerves with a sour taste. This may divert the nerves' attention and get rid of your hiccups. Cut a slice of lemon and suck on it or drink a shot of pure lemon juice.

12-Honey, Warm water

Lick a tablespoon of Honey slowly or put one teaspoon of honey, stirred in warm water and swallow it. This overwhelms the mouth with a sweet flavor and may short-circuit the irritated nerve. Like dill, honey could potentially tickle the vagus nerve to make the hiccups stop.

13-Dill seeds

Swallowing a teaspoon of dill seeds is an old folk remedy that may work for you. This traditional cure may work because swallowing the seeds stimulates the vagus nerve to make the hiccups stop.

14-Salt, Yoghurt

You can try to cure your hiccups by eating a smooth food like pudding or yogurt. The pudding or yogurt with coat your throat and help to cure the hiccups. Stir thoroughly ½ teaspoon common salt in a cup of yoghurt until the salt dissolves completely.Have this slowly to stop the hiccups.

15-Peanut Butter

A spoonful of peanut butter is a great remedy that could help stop continuous hiccups. In the process of chewing and getting it off your tongue and teeth, your swallowing and breathing patterns are interrupted. And hence, the hiccups will be history. Alternatively you can use Almond Butter or Nutella. Anything with a sticky gooey consistency similar to peanut butter will do.

16-Baking soda, Water

Pour ½ teaspoon of baking soda into the glass water and stir it well. Drink this mixture slowly until it's gone. After a few minutes, your annoying hiccups should vanish.

17-Ginger Slice

Take a small piece of peeled ginger and suck it slowly. This would stop the hiccups.


Drink a glass of ice water or suck crushed ice or enjoys a scoop of ice cream, the cure becomes a treat – a cold drink is believed to shock the system. This may shock your body and cause you to take a deep breath. The chill of the ice cream, steady swallowing, and a pleasurable distraction all add up to calming the diaphragm. And some people believe gargling with ice water relieves the hiccups.

19-Try Salt

Put ½ teaspoon of plain table salt onto your tongue. Swallow it and keep swallowing until the salty taste is gone. Make sure to follow it up with slow breaths, staying relaxed.
Do not drink or eat anything immediately after. Your hiccups should be gone!

20-Sugar/ Jaggrey

Overloading the nerve endings in the mouth with a sweet sensation may do the trick. Take a spoonful of Sugar or crushed Jaggrey and swallow it. The sugar will go down the throat and cure the hiccups. This way, the sugar overload will pack the most punch, because its graininess could slightly irritate the esophagus, causing the phrenic nerves to "reset" themselves. After you swallow the sugar drink a big glass of water and the hiccups should go away.

21-Drink Something

Drink a glass of water or juice without stopping. Take nine or 10 quick sips in a row from a glass. When you’re gulping a drink, rhythmic contractions of the esophagus override spasms of the diaphragm. The repeated swallowing can help to cure your hiccups.

22-Sip Some Hot

Drink a glass of warm water very slowly, all the way down without breathing. This probably works because the heat and burn are distracting enough to turn your body's focus on the burn, instead of the hiccup process.

23-Take an Antacid

This method may be more effective if you choose one that contains magnesium, since the mineral tends to decrease irritation and quiet the nerves. One or two tablets should do the job.


1-Hold Your Breath

This is probably the most well-known cure for hiccups. Simply hold your breath for as long as you can and slowly count to ten or twenty or until you sense that the hiccups are gone. Exhale slowly until your lungs are empty. Repeat 4 to 5 times or until you feel better.

2-Stick Your Fingers in Your Ears

Stick your fingers in your ears and slowly count to twenty will cure the hiccups. Or press the soft areas behind your earlobes, just below the base of the skull. That sends a “relax” signal through the vagus nerve, which connects to the diaphragm area.

3-Stick Out Your Tongue

Sticking out your tongue and yanking on it may stop hiccups quickly.

4-Pull On Your Tongue

Pull your tongue - hold the end of your tongue with your fingers and tug. This stimulates the vagus nerve and eases diaphragm spasms, which may sometimes stop hiccups. But you might not want to do this in public. And make sure your hands are clean first.

5-Tickle the Roof of Your Mouth

Tickling the soft palate of the roof of your mouth with a cotton swab may cure your hiccups.

6-Breathe Into a Brown Paper Bag

The old standby, breathing into a paper bag, is believed to work on the same principle as the breath-holding method. Both increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream, and the body becomes preoccupied with getting rid of it. Place a brown paper bag over your nose and mouth. Breathe in deeply, and then breathe out really fast. Repeat the process up to ten times, or until your hiccups are gone. (Stop if you feel light-headed.)

8-Cover Your Mouth

Cup your hands over your nose and mouth, but continue breathing normally. You'll get hiccup relief from the extra dose of carbon dioxide.

9-Try the Open-Mouthed Swallowing Method

Open your mouth and keep it open for a couple of minutes. If you feel the need to swallow, do so, but try to keep your lips apart when you do.

10-Use Straws Cup

Another homemade remedy to get rid of hiccups is to fill a straw cup with water. Stick your fingers in your ears and sip through a straw. Hold the water in your mouth while you use your forefingers to plug your ears. Then, slowly swallow the water. You’re pressing on the vagus nerve while also getting the benefits of steady swallowing. Take your fingers out of your ears, and you should find that your hiccups are gone. It sounds strange, but tries it!

11-Drink Without Using your Hands

Put a cup of water on a chair, and sit on another chair in front of it. Bend down and drink as much of it as possible without using your hands to touch, hold, or tilt the glass.

12-Pinch your Nose

Try pinching your nose and swallowing three times. It's not as easy as it sounds, but it does the trick! Place gentle pressure on your nose while you swallow.

13-Hug your Knees

Bring your knees to your chest and hug them for a couple of minutes.

14-Blowing up a Balloon

Hiccups can be cured by blowing up a balloon. Blowing up a balloon will change your breath and your mind and your hiccups may go away. You can use any type of balloon to try this hiccup remedy and of course the balloon can be any color.

15-Change Breathing Patterns

Breathe differently then you usually do. Take your air in through the nose and let air out through your mouth. By changing your breathing patterns you may be able to cure your hiccups.

16-Get Burping

Swallow air until you burp. Eventually, that air will want to come up in the form of a burp. It should reset your vagus nerve, ending your hiccups.

17-Try Coughing

Count the number of seconds between hiccups. Around the time a hiccup should be coming up, or when you feel it coming up, cough loudly and/or scream! Repeat 3 or 4 times, if necessary.

18-Alert your Body

Lie down for a long period of time. Then, stand up suddenly. That is, if that's not how you got the hiccups in the first place! If this doesn't work, stand up for a long period of time and lie down quickly instead.
