What is a Hernia?
A hernia is a bulge of intestine, another organ, or fat through the muscles of the belly. A hernia can occur when there is weakness in the muscle wall that allows part of an internal organ to push through. This disorder comes along with mild to severe pain which is uncontrollable.

HIATAL HERNIA: A hiatal hernia is different from other types of hernias, because it involves the stomach instead of the intestine. It occurs when part of your stomach bulges up through your diaphragm and into your chest. The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle that separates your belly from your chest. You can't feel a hiatal hernia or see a bulge.
INCISIONAL OR VENTRAL HERNIA: Incisional hernias are often the largest and most challenging hernia. Incisional hernias are hernias that result from weakness in the abdominal wall created by previous surgery. These tend to be large complicated hernias with scar tissues.

- While standing, bring your arms straight out from your sides and bend your elbows so that your hands are touching your chest. Then stand up on your toes as high as possible and DROP down onto your heels, rather like a weightlifter's squat! You should force a pretty good jolt. Drop down like this 10 times in a row. Then, while standing with your arms up, pant short quick breaths for about 15 seconds. That's it.
- Sit and take a deep breath, hold it. Still holding my breath, lift your knees as high and as long as you can. Exhale and lower knees slowly (at the same time). Walk around for a minute. Repeat as necessary.
- Every morning or when it is acting up stand up straight, feet shoulder width apart, take a deep breath and place your fingers into your "chest" (right where your rib cage separates) as far as you can, upon exhale pull the fingers straight down. Repeat as necessary.

- Do not apply any heat to the area and avoid any pressure over the swollen area.
- An ice bag may help to control the pain.
- Do not exhaust yourself.
- Do not exercise with full stomach.
- If you are overweight, losing weight alone may relieve the symptoms.
- Avoid wearing tight clothes around your chest or abdomen. They put pressure on the stomach.
- Avoid eating large meals. Eating small, frequent, bland meals to keep pressure on the esophageal sphincter.
- Do not eat for at least 2 hours before going to sleep.
- Avoid spicy and acidic foods.
- Do not bend over or lie down after eating.
- For hernia treatment avoids drinking alcohol.
- Avoid eating fats or high cholesterol foods that causes bloating in the abdomen.
- Avoid constipation, avoid straining during bowel movements and protect the back when lifting heavy objects.
- Avoid or reduce pressure on your stomach.
- Avoid exercising on a full stomach.
- Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches by placing bricks under the bed frame. Gravity will help prevent stomach acid from moving up into esophagus as you sleep. Do not use pillows, as they tend to increase pressure on the abdomen. This is very effective home remedy for hernia.
