Gallstones are the solid material formed in the gall bladder, which is a small organ under the liver. Gallstones occur when one of the compounds in bile, particularly cholesterol, becomes so saturated that it forms a solid. If a gallstone lodges in the bile duct, it can cause severe pain, inflammation, infection, and sometimes even jaundice due to the backup of bile.
Pregnancy, genetics, obesity, older age, diabetes, liver disease, a sedentary lifestyle, a high fat diet, rapid weight loss due to crash diet or starvation and certain forms of anemia are some of the risk factors of gallstones.
The common symptoms of gallstones include: Vomiting, Nausea, Backache, Indigestion, Belching, Abdominal bloating, Pain in the upper abdomen, Pain may be short lived or for may stay for longer, Pain between the shoulder blades, Jaundice, Recurring intolerance of fatty foods
Types of Gallstones:
There are two main types of gallstones
Cholesterol stones: these stones are yellow in color and 80% of the gall stones belong to this category. They are caused by too much cholesterol, bilirubin, or not enough bile salts or when the gallbladder does not empty as it should.
Pigment stones: these stones are smaller and darker and are made of bile pigment bilirubin. Their cause is uncertain although they tend to occur in people with cirrhosis, biliary tract infections, and hereditary blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia
Gallstones are a common problem. Some gallstones may not lead to any symptoms and therefore do not require treatment. However in some cases, surgery may be needed to remove gallstones. They can range in size from smaller than a grain of sand to larger than a golf ball and some people may develop more than one gallstone. 1-Nigella seeds, Chicory seeds, Senna

Make a fine powder of 50 gm Nigella seeds 50 gm Chicory seeds and 10 gm Senna and save in vessel. Take ½ tsp powder and mix 3 drops of Nigella seeds oil and have twice a day along with fresh water. This is a highly beneficial and trial prescription for gall stones.

2-Dried Figs

Soak 3 dried figs in a glass of water overnight and consume on an empty stomach. Again soak 3 figs in a glass of water and have before sleep. Do it for one month regularly. You should be able to pass the stones with the help of this treatment.

3-Nigella Seeds Tea, Nigella Seeds Oil

Boil ½ tsp partially pounded Nigella seeds in a cup of water for 5 minutes strain and drinks daily. It removes stone and enlarge gall bladder. OR mix 10 drops of Nigella seeds (Kalonji) oil in a tbs of lukewarm water take for few days. This works very quickly in the treatment of gall stone.

7-Olive oil, Sunflower oil, Grapefruit Juice

Olive oil and sunflower oil constitute an effective natural treatment for gallstones. Combine 30ml each of unrefined olive and sunflower oil. You can then drink about 120 ml of grapefruit juice. 8-Lemon juice, Olive oil

Mix well one tbs of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, one tbs of Lemon juice 2-3 ounces of water. Drink this mixture followed by plenty of water. Make a fine powder of 250 gm Nigella seeds (Kalonji) and mix with 250 gm/9 oz pure Honey. Mix 2 tsp of this mixture in ½ cup of lukewarm water and also mix 1tsp Nigella seeds (Kalonji) oil and takes on an empty stomach for 3-5 days. This is a 99% trial treatment of gall stones.

10-Apple Juice, Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix well one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of fresh apple juice and drink once everyday. This will help to prevent gallbladder infections and treat gallstone problems. This will significantly ease the pain within 15 minutes. The malic acid present in the apples assist in softening gallstones and vinegar stops the liver from making cholesterol that are responsible for forming stones in gallbladder. It also plays a key role in dissolving gallstones and alleviating pain.


Researchers found that consuming ½ a glass of wine can reduce the amount of gallstone attacks by as much as forty percent. When suffering from gallstone pain, drink half a glass of wine and within 20 minutes you will get relief from the pain. But don't go overboard. The research didn't find that drinking more than half a glass would offer any more protection.

12-Pear juice, Honey

Mix ½ glass of pear juice with ½ glass of hot water and 2 tbs of pure honey. Drink this juice thrice a day for two weeks. Pears are known to help in providing gallstone pain relief. The compound pectin present in pears helps soften cholesterol-filled gallstones, which in turn get flushed out of your body easily.

13-Beetroot, Cucumber, Carrot Juices

A mixed vegetable juice made of beet root, cucumber and carrots is a good remedy for gallstones. Take equal portions of carrot, beet-root and cucumber juices and mix them well. Drink this juice twice daily for 2 weeks to effective remove gallbladder discomfort. You’ll notice a huge improvement in your condition. Beet root helps cleanse the liver and strengthens the gallbladder. Carrots are rich in vitamin C and other nutrients that are good for the immune system. Cucumber’s high water content is great for detoxifying the liver and gallbladder.

14-Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is widely used as a traditional natural remedy for gallstones as well as detoxifying liver. The seeds of milk thistle contain silymarin flavinoid which stimulates bile production in the gallbladder and breaks down the components in the gall bladder. Increased bile production in turn decreases its concentration and helps flush out gallstones.  Boil one tablespoon of crushed milk thistle seeds in three cups of water for 2-3 minutes. Turn off the heat and then let the seeds steep for 20 minutes. Strain the tea, add honey to taste and drink it 2-3 times a day for one week.


Dandelion is another very useful herb for the treatment of gallstones. It contains a compound known as taraxacin that helps in promoting bile excretion from the liver thus detoxifying it and metabolize fat efficiently. When the liver starts functioning properly, it aids gallbladder functioning. Increasing the amount of bile produced decreases its concentration. And the greater volume is also more likely to flush out a stone. It can be taken as tea or tincture or eaten steamed. Steep and cover one teaspoon of dried dandelion root in a cup of hot water for five minutes. Strain and add honey for taste. Drink this tea two or three times a day for one or two weeks. If you suffer from diabetes, you should first consult with your doctor before having dandelion herb.


Peppermint aids digestion by stimulating the flow of bile and other digestive juices. Plus, it has a compound called terpene that can effectively dissolve gallstones. It is also believed to help relax spasms and relieve acute gallbladder pain. Steep and cover one teaspoon of dried or fresh mint leaves in a cup of hot water for five minutes. Strain and add one teaspoon honey. Enjoy the tea while it is still warm, twice daily for four to six weeks. Drink it between meals for maximum results.


Psyllium is a very good source of soluble fiber; hence it is considered a good remedy for gallstones. It is a very good source of soluble fibers that bind to the cholesterol in bile and help prevent gallstone formation. Psyllium also prevents constipation which also leads to gallstone formation. Add one tablespoon of psyllium powder to a glass of lukewarm water. Mix well and drink it two times a day especially at night before going to bed everyday.

18-Grapefruit juice, Citrus fruit juices, Lemonade

Have a lot of citrus fruits juices just as vinegar stops your liver from making cholesterol lemon juice or such citrus fruit juices also do the same task. Citrus fruits contain pectin which is helpful in treating the problem of gallstones. Drinking 1 cup/8 oz. unsweetened Grapefruit juice once a day for about 3 weeks helps dissolve gall stones you can also drink 16 oz Lemonade for the same effect.
Another good ingredient for keeping gallstone attacks under control is lemon juice. The pectin in lemon juice is believed to help get rid of gallbladder pain attributed to stones. Plus, the vitamin C in lemon juice makes cholesterol more water soluble, which promotes faster elimination of waste products.
You can drink four tablespoons of lemon juice mixed in a glass of warm water every day on an empty stomach. Continue this treatment for several weeks until the gallstones are eliminated from the body.

19-Turmeric, Honey

Add1 teaspoon honey to ½ teaspoon of turmeric and consume daily as it has the powers to dissolve 80% of the gallstones. Turmeric is found to be very effective in treating gallstones. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and it has one main ingredient called cur cumin. Turmeric helps in easily solubility of bile and will also help in easier dissolution of bile and its compounds.

20-Epsom salts

Epsom salts enable the gallstones to pass easily through the bile duct. Pour one teaspoon of Epsom salts into room temperature water and drink it during the evening.


Caffeine is known to prevent gallstones from forming. Have coffee everyday but do not drink it in excessive amounts. One or Two cups of coffee a day may help to reduce the risk of gallstones. Coffee increases the flow of bile and thus prevents gallstones.One study discovered that men who drank 2 to 3 cups of regular coffee a day cut their risk of developing gallstones by 40 percent. Researchers are not sure what it is about coffee that helps reduce the risk of forming gallstones. It might be the caffeine; however, teas and soft drinks containing caffeine did not produce the same effect -- and neither did decaffeinated coffee.

22-Artichoke Leaves

Artichoke leaf extracts are believed to help in preventing the formation of gallstones. Cyanarin is a compound found in artichoke that helps in improving the production of bile and salts. This will help in proper functioning of the body even if the gallstones block the bile ducts. An increase in the bile salts will eliminate and dissolve the gallstones.

23-St. John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort is a well known herb and its natural extracts work nicely in treating gallstones.  You can have as tea and drink about a cup of this tea a few times throughout your day. To make the tea, add a cup of boiling water to 4-5 leaves.


Rosemary is yet another essential herb which aid in preventing the development of gallstones. It enhances the production of bile and stops spasms from occurring inside the bile duct. It also helps in the breakdown of fats.

25-Quebra Pedra

26-Herbal Tea

You can prepare an herbal tea to help ease the passing of gallstones. Simmer two teaspoons of marshmallow root and one teaspoon of Oregon grape root in four cups of water for 15 minutes and then remove from heat. Add two teaspoons of dried dandelion leaves and one teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves and allow it to steep for 15 minutes.  Strain and drink this tea throughout the day, preferably after meals.

27-Wild yam

The herb Wild yam is a great pain reliever; its antispasmodic properties neutralize inflammation. To increase the flow of bile, use the herb wild yam. It relieves spasms of the bile duct and reduces pain. You can take it in the form of a cream or you can take wild yam capsules.

28-Castor Oil

To alleviate the pain and discomfort, place a hot pack on the abdomen. Gently warm one cup of pure, cold-pressed castor oil in a pan and soak a flannel cloth in it. Place the saturated cloth over the gallbladder area, and cover with plastic for 30 to 60 minutes. Follow this treatment at least three times a week until you recover completely. Castor oil‘s anti-inflammatory properties help neutralize inflammation and reduce pain. Plus, castor oil packs have a positive effect on the immune and lymphatic systems.
