Loose Motion or Diarrhoea

Loose motion or diarrhea refers to the frequent passage of watery unformed stools several times during the day. There is a loss of bodily fluids when diarrhea occurs and this can result in dehydration and imbalance of electrolyte levels and in the extreme cases can also lead to death. Diarrhea can be a mild one, acute or chronic. People of any age can be struck with diarrhea.

Symptoms of Loose Motion or Diarrhoea

The most common symptoms of diarrhea include:

  • Loose stools
  • Sense of urgency to have a bowel movement
  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Dehydration. The signs of dehydration include dry mouth, excessive thirst, listlessness, confusion, reduced urination, appetite loss and sleepiness
  • Fever
  • Nausea & Vomiting
The symptoms of complicated loose motion include the above symptoms and the symptoms given below
  • High Fever
  • Pus in the stools
  • Weight loss
  • Reduced urination
  • Blood  or mucus in the stool
  • Dark colored stools
  • Pain during bowel movements

It is important to consult your doctor for diarrhea treatment in case the symptoms are severe. There are also some natural ways to treat diarrhea symptoms. Some common natural home remedies for loose motions or diarrhea include:


1-Fennel, Black Cardamoms, Mint

  • Boil 1-2 tablespoon Fennel/Aniseeds (Sounf), 2-3 Black Cardamoms (Bari Elaichi) and 5-7 fresh or dried Mint (Pudina) stems with leaves in 1 litre water for 5-15 minutes. 
  • Strain and mix Rock Salt or Honey or Sugar to taste in a cup of this infusion and take lukewarm 3 to 4 times a day.

2-Black tea, Lemon juice, Sugar

  • Roast 10 gram Black Mayrobalan (Jang Hareer)and make powder then add 10 gram Sugar Candy (Misiri) powder.

16-Ripe Banana, Tamarind, Sugar

  • Make a paste of 1 ripe Banana (Kaela), 1teaspoon Tamarind (Immli) pulp and Salt or Sugar to taste.

17-Jambul tree bark Decoction

  • Taking decoction of Jambul (Jamun) tree bark is the most effective natural remedy for chronic loose motions/diarrhea. 
  • Boil handful of Jambul tree bark in one litre water until reduced by half litre and drink ½ cup thrice a day.

18-Roasted Tamarind seeds Powder

20-Apple cider vinegar, Filtered water

  • Stir 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar in a glass of boiled and lukewarm or filtered water with each meal. This is an effective way to cure loose motions/diarrhea.

21-Indian gooseberry, Black myrobalan

  • Make a powder of 10 grams Indian gooseberry and 5 grams black chebulic myrobalan and store in a container.

  • If there is blood in the stools, add half a teaspoon of honey to the decoction.

25-Sesame seeds, Goat’s milk

  • Mash 1 fully ripe Banana and add it to a cup of fresh organic Curd/Yoghurt and have it.  It is highly beneficial in dealing with loose motions/diarrhea.

32-Fenugreek Seeds, Butter milk

  • Fenugreek (methi) Seeds taken with Butter milk helps in curing loose motion.

33-Guava leaves Decoction

35-Chamomile, Mint Tea

  • Boil 1 tsp of chamomile flower and 7-9 of Mint or Peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for about 15 minutes.

36-Jambul leaves Decoction

  • Boil 50 grams of fresh Jambul leaves in 3 cups of water until reduced by 1 cup. Store this mixture in a clean, dry bottle. Take 2 tablespoons several times a day. 
  • Decoction of Jambul leaves is an effective natural cure for loose motions/Diarrhea.

Diet for Diarrhoea/Loose Motions

  1. The diet must be easy to digest. Only foods that bind the stool like yogurt, rice, banana, apple and pomegranate should be taken in the beginning. 
  2. Easily digestible foods like boiled vegetables, boiled rice, khichadi. Khichadi is prepared by cooking together rice Green gram/ Golden gram (Moong dal). Digestive spices like cumin, coriander, ginger, turmeric and cardamom should be used for cooking. 
  3. Make sure that you consume just soup or broth or semi solid food for a couple of days before returning back to your normal diet.
  4. Add 2-3 tsp of ghee when the ghee melts and becomes lukewarm then add 1 large length wise thinly sliced onion and fry till it turn slightly brown. Give the patient to eat this with the rice as a meal. Nothing else should be given. This will reduce the catching pain in the abdomen and also the frequency of passing the stools. It will also boost up the energy of the patient.
  5. Boil brown rice in water for about 45 minutes strain the mixture. Have the rice and drink the water in which the rice has been cooked by adding salt and lemon to taste.
  6. Boil fully carrots or potato in a little salty water drain and take it for lunch or dinner.

12 Tips To Prevent Dehydration

If you are suffering from severe loose motion, then you are bound to get dehydrated very soon. Hence, it is very important for you to stay hydrated at all times, especially when you are suffering from loose motion. This is the most common complication. It occurs if the water and salts that are lost in your stools, or when you vomit, are not replaced by your drinking enough fluids. You will need to drink even more if you are dehydrated. A doctor will advise on how much to drink if you are dehydrated.
  1. Soak half Nutmeg in 8 oz glass of water for 3 hours. Strain and mix this water with coconut water in equal amount. Drink thrice a day.
  2. Another helpful remedy is a sugar and salt solution. Mix 1 teaspoon of sugar and ½ teaspoon of rock salt in a cup of water. Small doses of this mixture (around a quarter cup) can be given whenever the patient wants to drink. It provides a good balance of water, salts, and sugar. The small amount of sugar and salt helps the water to be absorbed better from the gut into the body.
  3. Drink plenty of fluid such as fruit juices and water. Liquids should be given in small quantities (3 or 4 sips) at one time, though it can be given more frequently—at intervals of thirty minutes.
  4. You can also think of drinking certain healthy soups or fruit juices in small quantities. Pomegranate juice in small quantities can be also given frequently.
  5. In cases of excessive thirst, water boiled with coriander seeds should be given (after straining).
  6. Add 4 tablespoons of organic honey to 8 ounces of filtered or boiled and lukewarm water. Have this mixture as it is helpful in treating diarrhea.
  7. To treat dehydration caused by diarrhea, the fresh juice of Bottle gourd (lauki) should be given to patient twice a day so as to restore the loss of water in the body.
  8. Tender Coconut water is also a very good agent that will keep you hydrated during loose motions.
  9. Drinking lots of fluids would be beneficial in curing diarrhea.  Drinks like ginger ale or carrot juice is good for making the stools less watery.
  10. Add 1tsp of fresh ginger to water and boil the water and drink the mixture when it is lukewarm drink this mixture for every one hour.
  11. Take ORS (oral dehydration solution). You can either prepare it at home or buy it from drug store.
  12. Electrolyte powder mixed in water will also provide you relief from stomach pain and cramps.
