Diabetes has become a very common heath problem in the world today. Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the glucose level of the blood increases. This occurs due to lack of the hormone insulin in the body or because the insulin that is present in the body is not absorbed by the body.
There are two types of diabetes:
  • Type 1 called insulin dependent diabetes that usually affects children and teenagers
  • Type 2 that was previously called non-insulin dependent diabetes and usually affects adults. 
If left untreated, high glucose levels can damage blood vessels, posing great health problems in the long run. Despite various researches done and precautions taken, one cannot predict who will suffer from diabetes. Depending on the type and severity, every diabetic patient should be given medications. There are various natural home remedies for diabetes that will help you control your blood sugar level.

Common Causes of Diabetes

  •  Insulin deficiency
  •  High blood pressure
  • Heredity
  • Insulin resistance

  • Rarely due to pancreatitis

Diabetes Symptoms:

Insulin produces Beta Islet Cells in the body that maintains various body processes. But due to lack of insulin these cells become damaged or less in quantity and result in rapid weight loss, thirst, suffocation and smell in patient’s breath.
Another common symptom of diabetes is that the patient’s body shivers, sometimes slowly and sometimes noticeably rapid. The wounds of the patient take a lot more time to heal and in some cases it may not even heal. This is because the immunity system of the patient either fails or is weakened.

1-Gymnema sylvestre, Bitter gourd, Fenugreek, Nigella, Jambul, Black pepper

  • Make a fine powder of Gymnema sylvestre/Small Indian Ipecac (Gurmar booti) 50gm, dried Bitter gourd (Karela) 50gm, Fenugreek seeds (Methi dana) 50gm, Nigella seeds (Kalonji) 50gm, dried Jambul (Jamun) seeds  50gm, Black pepper (Seyah Mirch) 25gm and store in a vessel. 
  • Take ¼ tsp twice a day along with a cup of Soy milk or mix in a glass of milk or Butter milk (lassi) or soak in a glass of water overnight and consume on an empty stomach similarly soak in morning and consume at evening.  This is a highly beneficial and 99 % trial prescription for Diabetes.

2-Nigella seeds, Lebbek Tree seeds, Bitter apple, Gum Acacia

10-Gooseberry juice, Bitter gourd juice

11-Mango pulp, Jambul pulp

12-Bay leaves, Turmeric, Aloe Vera gel

  • Combine 1-2 teaspoons of ground Bay leaves, one teaspoon of Turmeric and one teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel. Drink this solution daily, before lunch and dinner.

13-Grewia asiatica (Falsa) bark, Cotton seeds kernels

  • Soak 12 gm bark of Grewia asiatica (Falsa) plant in 250 ml water strain and drink on an empty stomach for 15 days. 
  • Or pound coarsely 50 gm bark of Grewia asiatica (Falsa) plant and 25 gm Cotton seeds kernel in 1 litre water next morning strain and add salt to taste and drink. This remedy works very quickly in the treatment of Diabetes.

14-Australian fever Tree Leaves

  • Take 8 leaves of Australian fever tree (Sufeda) and roast them without getting them burned then soak in a glass of water overnight next morning strain and drink.

15-Common Sebestens / Gum berries Tree Leaves

  • Soak 3 leaves of Common Sebestens / Gum berries (Sapistan /Lasura) tree in a glass of water overnight in the morning pound well strain and drink, do these 15 days.

16-Loquat Tree Leaves

17-Nigella seeds oil, Bitter gourd juice

18-Mango Leaves

  • Dry under shade the tender Mango leaves in the shade and grind them. Eat ½ teaspoon of powdered mango leaves two times daily. 
  • Or Boil 15 fresh Mango leaves in 1 glass of water. Leave overnight. Filter this water and drink on an empty stomach. 
  • Tender mango leaves are very effective to treat diabetes by regulating insulin levels in the blood. They can also help improve blood lipid profiles.

19-Curry leaves

  • Eating 10 fresh fully grown Curry leaves (kari patta) every early morning for about 3 months is said to prevent diabetes. 
  • Curry leaves are useful in preventing and controlling diabetes as they have anti-diabetic properties. 
  • It is believed that curry leaves contain an ingredient that reduces the rate at which starch is broken down to glucose in diabetics.

20-Fenugreek seeds

  • Soak two tablespoons of Fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Drink the water along with the seeds in the morning on an empty stomach. 
  • Or eat two tablespoons of powdered fenugreek seeds daily along with hot milk. Repeat this remedy daily for few months to control blood sugar levels.
  • Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of fiber useful for controlling diabetes. These can enhance the secretion of glucose-dependent insulin. 

21-Jambul Tree /Black Plum/ Java Plum

  • Jambul (Jamun) is considered to be an effective medicine for treating diabetes. 
  • Each part of the Jambul plant such as the bark, leaves, berry and seeds can be used by those suffering from diabetes.
  • 100 grams of this Java plum consumed per day can do wonders in balancing the glucose level in blood and prevent insulin spikes. 
  • Caution – many tend to develop sore throat and constipation after consuming Jambul fruit. 
  • Powder the dried seeds, leaves or bark of the plant and take 1 tsp along with water twice a day.

22-Bitter Melon / Bitter Gourd

  • Bitter gourd is an ancient remedy to treat diabetes at home. Rich in plant insulin-polypeptide-P, a bio-chemical that is useful in reducing blood sugar.  
  • It can be taken in the form of juice, or cooked and fried and consumed with food daily. Many prefer drinking the stock after boiling the bitter gourd. 
  • If you are too stubborn or enjoy eating bitter gourd, then you could make stuffed Bitter bourd (karela) or fry them like chips and have them as a snack. 
  • The best effects can be gained when taken 3 gm / 1 tsp on empty stomach every morning for 3 weeks or take 1 tbs of its powder along with water. 
  • Be cautious while taking bitter gourd as it can even lead to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels. 

23-Basil Leaves

  • Also known as Tulsi, are packed with antioxidants that relieve oxidative stress and have essential oils that help in lowering blood sugar levels in the body. 
  • Have two to three Basil leaves whole or about one tablespoon full of its extracted juice on an empty stomach to lower the blood sugar levels.

24-Lady's Finger

  • This most sought out vegetable is rich in soluble fibers. It helps to slow down the absorption of glucose from the intestine. 
  • Soak one lady's finger cut at both the ends and sliced through the length in a glass of water overnight and consumes it next morning on an empty stomach. 
  • Do it for a month or so it reduces the blood glucose level to a great extent.


  • Drumstick "Shinga Phali" or "Saijan Ki Phali"   leaves are high in fiber content best known for their ability to boost one’s energy. 
  • In the case of diabetics, the leaves increase satiety and help in slowing the breakdown of food and also in lowering blood pressure.

26-Green Tea

  • Unlike other tea leaves, Green tea is unfermented and is high in polyphenol content, a strong antioxidant compound that is helpful in reducing the blood sugar insulin level in the body. 
  • Drink a cup of green tea on an empty stomach daily in the morning before your breakfast; is good for overall health.


  • Cinnamon (Dar Chini) is the common spice used in cooking. It has beneficial anti-diabetic properties, improves insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose levels. 
  • Having as little as ¼  teaspoon of Cinnamon per day can improve one’s insulin sensitivity and help controlling weight, thereby decreasing one’s risk for heart disease. 
  • It can also be chewed in its natural form instead of being made into a powder. 
  • Cinnamon, however, should not be taken in excess because we commonly use Cassia cinnamon (found in most grocery stores) which contains a compound called coumarin. It is a toxic compound that increases the risk of liver damage. 
  • There is another variety of this herb known as Ceylon cinnamon or “true cinnamon.” 
  • It is considered safer for health but its effects on blood glucose levels have not been studied adequately.


  • Neem, a tree that is believed to have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal property, has anti-diabetic properties as well. 
  • The bitter leaf enhances insulin receptor sensitivity, helps improve blood circulation by dilating the blood vessels, lowers blood glucose levels and reduces one’s dependence on hypoglycaemic drugs.  
  • Have 1 tbs the juice of the tender shoot of Neem leaves on an empty stomach, for best results.

29-Olive Oil

  • Studies indicate this may reduce blood-sugar levels. Olive oil is believed to have beneficiary effects such as reducing the cholesterol and triglycerides level in the blood. 
  • Use it in salad dressing cooking all foods with edible olive oil brings about this effect on the long run.

30-Emblica Gooseberry 

  • Indian gooseberry, also known as Amla, the common man’s fruit that is rich in vitamin C also has hypoglycemic properties. 
  • The fruit when taken orally helps to reduce the sugar level by stimulating insulin production within 30 minutes of consumption. 
  • Mix two tablespoon of the juice in one cup of water and drink it daily on an empty stomach to keep your blood sugar level in control.
