Many people face the problem of dark skin on knees and elbows and people feel much trouble in hiding dark knees and elbows. While dark elbows and knees are not a problem, they can cause quite an embarrassment, especially for women. It is really embarrassing for women to wear short skirts or sleeveless dresses with black knees and elbows.
Knees and Elbow skin is naturally thicker and more prone to moisture loss than other skin. On top of it, the wear and tear of leaning over them can further roughen the skin and make it coarse. Some of the most common causes for dark elbows and knees are excessive exposure to the sun, accumulation of dead skin cells, heredity, extra friction on the knees and elbows, dryness, improper skin care, certain diseases and the reaction to some types of medication. Whatever is the reason, the good news is that with a little effort and some great natural home remedies, you can get rid of black knees and elbow. If you are also facing the same problem then follow these natural home remedies for getting rid of dark elbows and knees naturally.


1-Semolina, Milk cream, Lemon juice

You need exfoliation as well as moisturizing for your darkened knees, elbows. Exfoliating will get rid of dead skin, helping to soften the area and remove any dirt that is present. So exfoliate gently. Be tolerant and you will soon notice a big difference.
Make a paste of 1 tbs Semolina (Sooji) 1 tbs Milk cream and juice of one Lemon.  Apply this scrub on knees and elbows and scrub it using circular motion & leave for approximately 20 minutes and then wash the mixture off with water to obtain the lightened skin. The rough texture of Semolina helps in getting rid of dead skin cells and milk cream works as a heavy moisturizer on your black knees and elbows. Lemon juice- the mother of all remedies for any dark area on your skin acts as a natural bleach to whiten the skin tone of your dark knees and elbows.

2-Vitamin E, Lemon juice, Glycerin, Milk

There should be no deep lines visible on the joints. If you can see lines, that means your skin is dry and you need to moisturize it. Vitamin E oil is a boon for any skin problem. Apply oil from Vitamin E supplements topically to get smooth and clear skin within few weeks.  The dark discoloration of the elbows and knees may be reduced by a frequent application of fresh lemon juice which is believed to be rich in naturally occurring bleaching properties.
Mix 1 tsp Vitamin E, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp glycerin, and 4 tbs milk. Do massage on dark areas with this paste and leave for 15 minutes. Wash dark areas with warm water 20 minutes after massaging.

3-Fuller’s earth, Lemon

Lemon is an antioxidant. In addition it has bleaching and exfoliating properties, and so can be used to get rid of dark skin / dead cells on various parts of your body, including dark elbows and knees. It also clears the way for the healthy cells reproduction.
Cut a large lemon into two equal halves. Squeeze out a little juice from both halves, so as that you have two small cups. Apply or sprinkle 1-1 tsp Fuller‘s earth (Multani Mitti) powder onto both halves. Scrub each lemon half onto your elbows and knees for 10 to 15 minutes. Or Mix 1 tsp Fuller‘s earth powder with an identical amount of lemon juice. Apply till dry. Then in the end wash using mild soap & water. You will surely get exceptional results.

4-Ripe Tomato, Lemon juice, Glycerin

Use bleaching fruits (fruits good for oily skin) in conjunction with moisturizing agents (liquids good for dry skin like glycerin) of your applying as a knee packs, elbow pack or scrub. Like, lemon juice with glycerin and tomato juice is a good option. Make a paste of 1 ripe Tomato add juice of one Lemon and 1 tsp glycerin and then apply this mixture on to the black knees & elbow and then rub the skin utilizing this mixture for about 5 minutes. Then in the end wash using mild soap & water.

5-Castor oil

Castor oil has natural bleaching properties and it also softens the rough skin on the knees and elbow giving it smoothness and glow. This is one of the cheapest remedy for dark skin formed by friction and dryness. Rub Castor oil to the knees and elbows for 10 minutes at night before going to bed. After massage leave dark areas for overnight and next morning wash with warm water and body wash. Within few days you will notice that your skin will become super soft and fair.

6-Leavened dough of wheat flour, Milk

This remedy helps to lighten elbows as milk contains lactic acid which reduces skin pigmentation, while the leavened dough helps to exfoliate dead skin cells.
Paste of Leavened dough of wheat flour (Khamira Atta) and milk when applied on the elbows also prevent these from becoming dark. Apply this paste for fifteen minutes using round motion and then wash it with plain water. Do again the remedy once each two days. Repeat until you see changes in the color.

7-Turmeric, Sugar, Olive oil

Turmeric has antiseptic properties and olive oil has natural bleaching properties and it also softens the rough skin on the knees and elbow giving it smoothness and glow. Sugar granules work as a gentle exfoliates to remove dead skin cells. This is one of the cheapest remedy for dark skin formed by friction and dryness. Mix 1 tbs sugar, 1 tbs olive oil and ¼ tsp of turmeric and blend into a thick paste. Using this paste rub and leave them on the affected areas for 10-15 minutes before washing them off. You will feel the sugar granules getting smaller in size as you keep on rubbing.

8-Baking soda, Milk

Baking soda with milk is great for super sensitive skin, you just need to take one tablespoon Baking soda and add some milk to it, enough to make a thick paste. Apply this paste onto your elbows and knees and rub it in circular motions for 10 minutes. Repeat this treatment once every day or every alternate day, till your dark knees and elbows are lightened. When you see that the skin tone of your joints has lightened, do it once a week or fortnight.

9-Lemon juice, Glycerin, Baking soda

You can also choose for a homemade scrub with the use of baking soda and lemon juice. Baking soda has substances that make the skin super soft and because of its rough texture, it also helps in getting rid of dead skin cells. The lemon juice acts as acidic to eliminate dead skin cells, uncovering lighter skin from underneath plus it also work as a mild natural bleaching agent. You have to do is to mix 4 tbsp of Baking soda and 4 tbsp of glycerin then add a fine amount of lemon juice to make it into a thin paste. Scrub your knees and elbows with this paste and leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash it with warm water. You will notice that your skin will become super soft.

10-Turmeric, Honey, Milk cream

Turmeric is a natural bleaching agent which helps to reduce melanin in the skin. Adding milk cream in turmeric powder is a great way to achieve fair elbows and knees. Honey moisturizes the dry skin and also has antiseptic properties. These natural properties of the ingredients will help to get rid of black elbows and knees.
Mix 1 tsp turmeric and 1 tbs milk with 1 tsp honey to make it a smooth paste. Apply this paste to your elbows (and knees), using a circular motion, and leave it there for at least 20 minutes. Wet your hands and rub it for 2 minutes and then rinse off.

11-Sesame oil, Sugar 

Exfoliation and Moisturizing are basic to any skin care routine and more so for black knees and elbow. The sugar present in this home remedy work as exfoliate and the Sesame oil is great for moisturizing such areas as it has especially high proportion of essential fatty acids.  Mix 1 tbsp of Sesame oil and 2 tbsp of Sugar to form a scrubbing paste.  For better results, you can even use lukewarm Sesame oil. Or add enough oil to the sugar until you have reached a slushy consistency. Before taking bath rub this scrubbing paste on to your dark elbows and knees for at least 5-10 minutes. You will feel the sugar granules getting smaller in size as you keep on rubbing.

12-Almond oil, Lemon, Honey

Rubbing Almond oil on the darkened elbows and knees is a great way of getting fair coloured elbows and knees. It also retains the moisture of the skin. Lemon juice has natural bleaching property and honey moisturizes the skin preventing darkening of the skin. Repeat this remedy at least thrice a week to get better results.
Take the juice of one lemon and mix it with one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of Almond oil. Apply the mixture on the affected areas and leave the mixture to act for at least 20 minutes. Wash the mixture off with water to get the lightened skin.

13-Sea salt, Lemon juice, Olive oil

Mix well 1tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice and 4 tbsp sea salt in a small glass bowl. Lemon juice contains natural bleaching properties, but is much gentler on the skin than bleach is. The grainy property of the salt makes it work as a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells. In addition the olive oil works as a moisturizer. Rub this mixed paste onto your dark elbows and knees every day for 10 to 15 minutes to see significant difference in few weeks’ time.

14-Lemon, Sugar, Coconut oil

Scrubbing your elbows helps to remove dry, flaky skin cells which become trapped in the elbow crease, causing skin to darken. If regular scrubbing is done the skin can become fairer within few days. Sugar granules combined with lemon exfoliates the dry dead skin and aids to form a new softer skin layer. Lemon is natural bleacher and has a lightening effect on the skin. Coconut is rich in essential fats and Vitamin E that nourishes the skin and makes it soft and supple.
Mix 1 tbsp of Coconut oil, 2 tbsp of Sugar and 1 tsp of fresh lemon juice to form a scrubbing paste. Rub this natural whitening solution onto your dark elbows and knees and leave it there for 15 to 20 minutes. Just remember not to scrub too hard or too frequently, as this may cause your skin to produce extra cells which can make your elbows even darker. Scrub gently, just once or twice a week.

15-Aloe Vera, Lemon juice, Honey

Aloe Vera Juice is best if you see some dry creaks on your elbows, it will not only heel the dry and dead skin lines, but it will help you get smooth and beautiful elbows too.Aloe Vera also reduces the sun damage caused to the skin due to overexposure of the elbows and knees to the sun whereas saponins and lignins present in aloe plant go deep in the skin and clean it effectively. It also moisturizes the skin and prevents the dryness which may lead to darkening of the skin. Lemon juice is the best natural bleach and honey, the best natural moisturizer and softening the skin considerably.
Make a mask of 1 tbs fresh aloe vera gel, 1tsp honey and 1tsp fresh lemon juice. Apply the mask to the knees and elbows and leave it for half an hour to get fresh looking skin on your elbows and knees.

16-White Vinegar, Yoghurt

Yogurt and vinegar contain lactic acid and acetic acid respectively which helps in lightening skin color. When used together this home remedy to reduce the dark color of the skin as they cleanse and moisturize the skin. Combine one tbsp of yogurt with one teaspoon of white vinegar and mix until they form a paste. Apply to elbows, rubbing in a circular motion. Leave for 20 minutes, then rinse off and moisturize.

17-Walnut, Coconut Oil

Coconut oil and Walnut powder make good exfoliates for dark skin patches. Prepare a mixture of 1 tbsp coconut oil and 3 walnuts coarse powder. The mixture can be applied on the affected area to exfoliate the dead cells of the skin and help in rejuvenating the skin to usual degree of suppleness. Rub in circular motion for 10-15 minutes. Wash off with warm water.

18-Gram Flour, Curd, Lemon

Gram flour works as a natural skin cleanser, softener, tan remover and also provides mild exfoliation. While organic curd helps in making some very good exfoliates, it is also excellent bleach due to the presence of lactic acid in it. Lemon is loaded with natural bleach powers and it can actually remove all kind of dirt, dust and dead cells from your body and your skin and can heal the skin issues very smoothly without any harsh impact , as long as you are inside, and not getting in sunshine. Mix well 2 tbsp Gram flour, 1 tsp Lemon juice and enough curd to make thick paste. Apply the mixture and rub in circular motion, allow it to dry and wash it off to get light colored skin.

19-Use Moisturizers

Dry skin causes skin to darken, so remember to keep your elbows moisturized! Moisturizers hydrate the skin and avoid the dryness of the skin. This will prevent darkening of the skin. The moisturizers also reduce the friction on the skin. After using any ingredient to exfoliate or scrub your dark elbows or knees, remember to moisturize the area with any natural oil like olive oil, sesame seed oil or coconut oil will retain the moisture of the skin and reduce the darkness of the skin.
Another, more intensive way to moisturize your elbows is to apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly or vaseline to prevent re-occurrence of darkening of the affected areas. Apply good quality moisturizes after having shower to keep your skin fresh and supple. For best results, use lotions which contain shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil or olive oil. These natural fats act as good moisturizers and help to make the skin soft. This helps to remove the darkness caused by dry and flaky skin.

20-Use Sunscreen Lotions

If none of the above home remedies for getting rid of dark knees or elbows work then we suggest you try a sunscreen lotion. Sun exposure can cause damage skin and make the skin on elbows and knees darker, so it's important to wear sunscreen every day. Using sunscreen lotions while going out reduces the chances of developing dark skin on the exposed parts. Although this is especially important during the sunny summer months, harmful UV rays are present even when it's cloudy or raining, so you should wear sunscreen all year round. The use of a strong sunscreen lotion would help protect the skin and can further help lighten dark elbows and knees. Make sunscreen application part of your morning routine.
