They are very dangerous and can lead to serious medical problems and death. There are a wide variety of diet pills on the market that are available, many of them have addictive qualities, and some even contain small amounts of laxative. Prescription diet pills like the popular Phen/Fen (phentermine/fenfluramine), Caffeine pills and/or Ephedrine Hydrochloride, Acutrim and Dexatrim should never be taken without the written prescription of a doctor, and should not be taken continuously.

It is also important to keep in mind that any medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, can interact with other medications causing adverse effects, or decreasing the effectiveness of one or both.

2-Laxatives

Laxative abuse is a common form of "weight control" used by people with eating disorders. It works by forcing food out of the body, so that it cannot be properly absorbed. It also causes fluid loss, which can make the user feel skinnier. Continued Laxative use can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, bloating, cramping, cardiac arrhythmias, irregular heart beat and heart attack, renal problems, and death.  Many people also find that after prolonged use they cannot move their bowels without them. They may experience constipation, severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Laxative abuse is very dangerous and can lead to permanent damage to the bowels, severe medical complications, and even death.

3-Diuretics

Similar to laxatives, “water pills” in the sense give a person a feeling of weight loss. Diuretics do not cause weight loss, but repeated use can cause serious medical complications. In fact, diuretics cause the body to become severely dehydrated, which will lead to heavy water retention and this will leave you looking bulkier than ever. They also seriously damage your kidneys, and cause electrolyte imbalance. Electrolyte imbalances can occur from repeated use, which is very serious. Your body’s electrolytes need to be in balance in order for your organs, such as the heart, kidneys, and liver, to function properly. Once the electrolytes go out of balance, a person is at very high risk for heart failure and sudden death.

4-Smoking

Smoking has countless health risks. Yet some people especially young adults use smoking as a diet strategy. Nicotine has been shown to be an appetite suppressant, but the risks of smoking vastly outweigh any benefits. It is true that smoking dulls taste buds, suppresses appetite, and slightly increases metabolism. But the health risks are so great. Beyond the numerous health risks, weight gain is often a side effect when smokers try to kick the addictive habit. Don’t smoke for any reason, least of all to lose weight.

5-Ipecac Syrup

All of these forms of weight loss are dangerous, but the most dangerous is the use of syrup of ipecac. The use of Ipecac Syrup can cause instant death! Many people with eating disorders abuse this syrup to help induce vomiting. Ipecac should only be used in cases of accidental poisoning or drug overdose. Using Syrup of Ipecac for anything other than its purpose causes systemic toxicity which can cause weakness, tenderness and stiffness of muscles, cardiac disease and heart failure, coma, seizures, shock, increase in blood pressure, with possible hemorrhage, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia and death.

Frequent vomiting also causes excess fluid loss that can cause serious dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, which can lead to heart attacks. You will have headaches, dizziness, nausea, and you will probably damage your internal organs, too.  Unless medically supervised, don’t cut calories below 1,200 per day. Otherwise, you will struggle to get enough nutrients to fuel your activities and satisfy your hunger. Drastic calorie restriction also causes a shift toward a higher percentage of body fat, which increases the risk for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Keep in mind that when you lose weight quickly, you may be at risk to pack it back on with more fat and less muscle especially if you're over 50.

8-Painful Tongue Patch

The tongue patch is a short-term weight-loss aid.  A piece of plastic mesh is sewn onto your tongue, and with six stitches. The patient keeps it in their mouth for a month. From day one, it becomes incredibly painful to eat any solid food, so they stick to a strict liquid diet. All they can drink is broth, smoothies, juice, and soup. Then it is removed.

9-The K-E diet/Tube Feeding

It involves putting food into your body through the nose, using a dripping tube. For 10 days, eating is avoided completely, and a high protein, low carb formula is fed through the tube, delivering roughly 800 daily calories. A few hours of this and a process called ketosis is said to be triggered, which burns body fat due to the lack of carbohydrates. The fat is burned but the muscle and water in the body remain untouched. There are some marked dangers of this outrageous trend. Least among them are bad breath, almost no physical energy, and serious constipation. More dangerous side effects include kidney troubles, including in some cases, outright failure.

11-Extreme Exercising

Getting at least 30 minutes of moderately each day is beneficial for your health, but exercising for several hours each day to lose weight does not necessarily work. Extreme Exercising can cause grave problems. That much exercise makes you hungrier and you may end up consuming even more calories, or mistakenly believe you can reward yourself because you exercised. Some people think more is better and go way beyond what’s healthy. That kind of obsessive exercise can begin to control their lives in an unhealthy way. Take a moderate approach to exercise, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it for the long haul.

12-Stomach Stapling

Stomach Stapling is a pouch or gastric band.  It is a restrictive band placed around the patient's stomach that gives the sensation of a full stomach after eating smaller portions of food, thus letting the patient eat less and lose weight without going hungry. But fitting the band requires surgery, with potential side effects. However, it is a surgery only given to the very obese, and this is because it is very, very risky. Stomach infections are common in people who have this surgery, and it is a very extreme way to lose weight. Unless you are severely overweight, it’s much better to try other, less invasive methods first.

13-The Tapeworm Diet

The theory behind this diet is that you can continue to eat the same amount, but the worm will digest half of it for you. If a tapeworm is absorbing your body's nutrients and calories, you can eat all you want and enjoy the taste. Then the worm diverts it all before it hits your waistline, right? Allowing a ten foot worm reside in your intestines includes serious side effects serious dangers, including digestive blockages, organ function disruption, malnutrition brain and nervous system damage, and even death. In fact, tapeworm pills may have been sold as weight-loss aids in the past. These pills are now banned in most civilized areas of the world. Now you must get your tapeworms either from partially rotting meat or feces that have already been infected with these worms. Yes, you have to eat rotten meat or poop and yes, people are doing this in the name of dieting.

14-Cleansing Diets/Detox Plans

Our body is uniquely fine-tuned to detoxify and excrete toxins. So cleanses are unnecessary and can lead to serious complications by messing with your body’s system. Cleanses cause weight loss from water and stool weight. But they can be dangerous. They carry risks of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and more. The danger of any “detox” or cleansing diet is that it takes a while for your body to absorb the correct nutrients from foods. This is part of the idea that a cleansing diet relies upon: if you cleanse right away, you are not ingesting all of the calories. On the same token, you are not absorbing any of the nutrient, minerals, and vitamins that are necessary for healthy living, and are not receiving any real nourishment from the food you are eating. But sure, you aren’t getting any of the calories. Instead of detoxifying, be more mindful of what you eat. If you want to cleanse or detoxify your body, drink plenty of water and eat lots of high-fiber foods.
